accept vs. except

By definition, these homonyms are so diametrically different that it seems incomprehensible they should sound alike. But they do, so let's get right to the memory tip.

Think of the common use of X. When we want to eliminate an item from a list, we may mark it off with an X. Or what about those wordless safety signs. The picture shows a prohibitted action crossed out with a brilliant red slash or X. In these examples, X clearly means NO.

And conveniently, the word except, which means "not" or "left out," contains an X. Simply recall this link, and you'll be less likely to choose the wrong word.
